In my old blogging days I used to write posts periodically of the current things in my life, and they were some of my favorites. It’s like sitting down with a friend and chatting about all the seemingly insignificant parts of your life.
So, welcome. Grab a cup of coffee and settle in.
currently loving :: The @art.infinitus account on Instagram. The art shared here is just so gorgeous, and every time it pops up in my feed, it makes me smile.
currently reading :: I always have several books going at once so I’ll list them all!
Weapons of Mass Instruction: A Schoolteacher’s Journey Through The Dark World of Compulsory Schooling by John Taylor Gatto. I love to read Gatto’s profound words about education, and this one is no exception. If you’ve never delved into his writing, I encourage you to do so. You’ll never see the public school system the same way again.
Little Women is our current read aloud. I have never read it! We have been working through the history of the arts this year and we are right smack in the Romantic era. Since this book is one of the most popular pieces of literature of that time, we decided to give it a try and we are all loving it! This version with all the ephemera made to look real, and tucked away in little pockets is extra fun!
America’s Blessings: How Religion Benefits Everyone, Including Atheists by Rodney Stark. I’m reading this with a friend’s teenage daughter and the first three chapters alone elicited an hour long phone conversation. It’s full of sociological findings that are mostly surprising to both believers and atheists alike.
Melania by Melania Trump. I love a good memoir, and this one is proving to be so satisfying. From her upbringing in Solvenia, throughout the world of European high fashion, to her fortuitous encounter with Donald Trump that changed the course of her life, Melania is the epitome of class and grace. She is unparalleled as a fashion icon, and I am here for every perfectly chosen pair of heels she reveals to us.
currently excited for :: the possibility of breaking ground on our home in a couple of months! We moved to South Dakota 5 years ago, bought land 2 years ago, and have basically dreamed of owning a home on land since just a couple of years into our marriage. It’s been a long time coming, lots of hard work, sacrifice, and patience, and we are just really hopeful that this is the year.
currently trying to :: find a good phone option for our home. The kids are at the age where we can leave them here and there, but we need a phone of some kind for our home that they can use to contact us. Too many options, yet none of them seem that appealing. Ugh. Can we go back to the days of everyone having a home phone?
currently working on :: a really fun homeschooling project! It’s been in the works for over a year now, and I’m just finishing up the final steps before putting it out there for you guys. Eeek! I’m nervous, but also really proud of it so I’m happy to finally be getting it out there.
currently watching :: Devil in the Family: The Fall of Ruby Franke. You guys. This is WILD and I can’t stop thinking about it. This three part series on Hulu is about former YouTube vlogger, Ruby Franke, and mom of six who was arrested for child abuse. The way she spiraled from trying to make her family look perfect, to an actual spiritual attack that took hold of her life, is absolutely tragic. The way the children were treated through it all really begs you to think deeply about the way people present themselves on social media, and in turn, how we present ourselves.
currently planning :: A homeschool graduation ceremony! Our church has decided to start an annual homeschool graduation ceremony complete with caps, gowns, and diplomas, and I’m so excited for it! I love the idea of honoring our homeschool graduates in this way, and am hoping it becomes a beloved tradition.
currently singing :: The Essex Green. This fun little band was a favorite probably 15 years ago, and this past week my dad has been teaching my son how to play Rue de Lis on the ukulele. It gets stuck in my head and I don’t mind one bit.
currently needing :: some new items in my wardrobe, although I’m wanting to be really intentional about what I purchase. I have what I’m calling a closet crisis right now, and I need some serious help.
currently listening to :: I’ve recently been hooked on The AC Podcast. This is a podcast put out by Apologetics Canada, and I have really enjoyed the way the guys present topics. These kinds of podcasts are some of my favorites, but I have found it difficult to find many that are both knowledgeable and humble. That combo is my jam, and this one is a winner.
currently wishing :: for summer. I am normally a winter person. I love so many aspects of this snowy and magical season. And I generally hate summer clothing. I just have never been comfortable with the less amount of clothing you have to wear to be comfortable during summer. HOWEVER. For various reasons, this has felt like an extra difficult winter and I’m really just ready to move on. So here I am, changing my ways, and wishing for summer to get here just a little bit faster.
currently doing :: Getting our taxes done and writing a check to the federal government that has squandered away our money for years and years on the most worthless and offensive things. Ask me how I really feel about this and my answer will likely include the opinion that we are in a “throw the tea in the sea” moment in history.
currently dreaming of :: A steak sandwich by The Modern Proper that I made the the other night and basically can’t get out of my head. Sourdough baguette, flank steak, horseradish mayo, brie cheese, arugula, and red onion…to die for.
I love this update! Also -- I FEEL you on the closet crisis. I have go-to items that are a decade old for wearing around the house, but leaving the house isn't fun. I need a couple capsule items that make me feel like myself and put together.
Love this friend, wish I could talk about all these things over coffee right now! That sandwich looks divine!
